Burn baby burn

I have another unpopular literary opinion. Fahrenheit 451 is just...okay. I know, I know, "what's wrong with me?" "This is a major classic," or whatever. I know.

But listen.

I'm about halfway through and it's not capturing me. Instead, I'm feeling lukewarm and just slightly bored, but I can't put my finger on why. It's disappointing because when I read a dystopian novel I expect to be blown away.

When I read the Hunger Games, I devoured those novels (pun intended). Same with Animal Farm andThe Rules. This may be my childlike need to be constantly entertained, but I usually want a book that's exciting from page one. Not a slow burn (pun intended again).

However, I do think that I'm coming into this book with unfair expectations. I keep remembering 1984 and wishing this was that.

I do find the concept of book burning, illegal reading, and knowledge as power interesting. Kind of like a contemporary Dark Ages.

It also fascinates me to think that this sort of concept, limiting knowledge gained through books, could only work in the time period it was written in. Now in the 21st century, with internet and instant access to anything, how successfully could a government possibly keep everyone in the dark? I'd love to see a modern-day version of Fahrenheit done!

Maybe my opinion will change when I reach the end of the story, but that's where I am now. What's your favorite dystopian novel?
