Odysseus is hot
Forget the modern-day hero. Odysseus is one for the ages. Clever and charismatic, Odysseus navigates treacherous seas, colossal monsters, and very pissed off gods in a tale that has somehow transcended centuries.
I'm not gonna lie. Odysseus is kind of hot. His strength, intelligence, and charm are captivating and make for a compelling protagonist. I don't want to spoil the end, but let's just say that he accomplishes some CRAZY feats that make him even more attractive.
The author, Homer, created an enchanting hero, but the story is about more than Odysseus. Over the course of 24 chapters, Odysseus' family, side characters, and the even the muses provide a plethora of cohesive twists and turns that set the stage for modern epic writers like Tolkien and Martin. It's sort of a Greek Game of Thrones.
At first, I was intimidated by this story. It's very long, very old, and obviously written in a different language. But reading a good translation really helped me understand the words in modern English. Several of the chapters are also stories that might be more familiar than you realize. Ancient characters like Cyclops and Calypso, as well as several Greek gods, play pivotal roles in the story, making it easier to contextualize the content.
If you're looking for an action-packed adventure that was also written in 800 B.C.E., I highly recommend The Odyssey. It is definitely, definitely EPIC.
