Interview with an author: Ron Rash

Updated: Oct 2, 2019

I had the privilege of going to see author Ron Rash read some selections from one of his novels, Something Rich and Strange.

He is super chill and had the coolest Appalachian accent. It was amazing to get advice from such a prolific and successful author.

His most popular novel, Serena, is now a movie starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

Here are some of the most interesting things Rash said and advised.

His process:

  • "Discipline and patience. If you keep writing, something will almost always come."

  • "I write six hours a day."

Editors:

  • "Have faith in yourself when submitting to an editor."

  • "Don't be discouraged. Someone is reading your writing attentively and wants to help make it better."

  • "Have a tough person who you love look over your work."

  • "Prove people wrong by writing something great."

Biggest pieces of advice:

  • "Read as much as you can, not just people who write like you. People from all over the world."

  • "How do you become great at something? You practice. Reading is your practice."

  • "I don't know any writer who isn't a voracious reader."

I literally had no idea who Ron Rash was before going to see him read, so basically I'm ignorant. But I highly recommend going to see an author read some of their work, even if you don't know who they are. It's a really intimate experience and you will 100% learn something.
