Master Guide: Hobbies
Strong characters are three-dimensional creatures. They have likes, dislikes, pasts, and goals. Their entire being does not revolve around the particular story being told.
Maybe your character likes running in the morning or playing volleyball with friends. Perhaps he or she is super into Candy Crush. The point is that characters need interests to be interesting.
I love writing characters who are amazing at things I suck at. I've created talented gymnasts, visionary architects, and gifted painters. Sometimes I like giving characters interests I also share like writing, puzzles, and watching Game of Thrones.
Whatever you decide, make sure you think of your character as their own person and give them some activities to be passionate about.
