Summer Reads
I love reading a fantastic book outside on a warm summer day. Whether at the beach, by the pool, or a at park with a view, summer reading both relaxes me and inspires me to tackle some writing of my own.
Here are a few treasures I recommend checking out this steamy season.
1. Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter
Takes places across decades and continents from Los Angeles to Italy with vivid descriptions and earnest, profound characters.
2. The Old Man and the Sea by Earnest Hemingway
A man tries to get a fish and you really feel like you're out there on that boat.
3. Modern Lovers by Emma Straub
A sweaty summer in Brooklyn where parents and their kids fall in and out love.
4. Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson
One of my old favorites that gives the origin story of Peter Pan.
5. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas
A sweeping action adventure featuring love, deception, and revenge.
6. The Vacationers by Emma Straub
A family goes on a European vacation and realizes how dysfunctional they really are.
7. This One Summer by Mariko and Jillian Tamaki
If you don't like books with words, try this one with pictures. Really quick, and still captures that summer spirit.
