Weird and wonderful

Have you ever finished a story and thought, "What the heck did I just read?" Well, same. The following is a list of acclaimed short stories that I found odd and sometimes downright disturbing. Read them for yourselves to see what I mean!

Where Are You Going Where Have You Been?

Joyce Carol Oates, Read Here

This work was inspired by a series of murders that occured in 1966. Right off the bat, that should warn you that this is a chilling story. The central action revolves around a self-absorbed 15-year-old named Connie being harassed and threatened by a much older, terrifying man.

Good Country People

Flannery O'Connor, Read Here

Amputee Hulga and her mother have a strained relationship living together on their Georgia farm. One day a Bible salesman shows up at their door and he is not what he seems. Hulga ends up trapped in a hayloft with her prosthetic leg stolen. Read for yourself to fill in the blanks.

A Good Man is Hard to Find

Flannery O'Connor, Read Here

This is another weird af story by O'Connor. A man named Bailey takes his wife, children, and mother on a family road trip to Florida. Through a series of wild twists and turns, they end up in some very creepy, very deadly danger.

White Angel

Michael Cunningham, Read Here

This is my favorite story on this list. The plot is about two brothers, one sixteen and the other nine, and their experiences with age-inappropriate substances. The boys dabble in sex, drugs, and partying, which leads to terminal consequences for one of them.
